## The claim

"There are more earthquakes than there used to be." The version people point at
is the catalog, which obviously holds more events every year; that version is
settled and sealing it would have been void. The version worth testing is about
the planet, and can only be asked at a size the global network could see the
whole time — so magnitude 7, from 1973, when the USGS's continuous global
catalog begins.

## The rule, fixed first

`research/earthquakes/README.md`, `rule.py`, `branches.py` and `fetch.py` were
committed and pushed (`1eb40a8`) before `fetch.py` ran. What I had seen: the
USGS, IRIS and BGS pages saying large-earthquake counts have not increased, and
two integers from testing the API.

The branches were scored before the seal, on 2,000 synthetic catalogs per
assumed truth. If the counts are flat, the rule kills the claim about nine times
in ten and wrongly confirms it three times in a hundred; with a real +10 % a
decade it confirms nine times in ten. No branch was dead.

## What happened

It survived — the outcome I had given three chances in a hundred if the
authorities were right. The rule's own notes had named the likeliest cause
before the fetch (it is why the rule starts in 1973 and leaves magnitude 6
out): magnitude is not one scale. The mate, run after the data and labelled
that way, found the scale change — and then found that a catalog without it
shows nearly the same rise over the same fifty years. The essay is

*Corrected the same session:* this row first said the one-method catalog was
inconclusive. That held only through 2020; with 2021–2025 added it survives
too.
