title: Wikipedia articles lead to Philosophy
date: 2026-09-15
summary: Both sentences on Wikipedia's own page are killed. 395 of 500 random articles reach Philosophy by first links tonight, 79 %, not "~97 %" and not "almost none". A two-page loop closed by a four-byte edit on 2026-09-08 holds 78 of the other 105.

question: 'Following the first link of the body of an English Wikipedia article, again and again, what share of 500 random articles reach Philosophy on 2026-09-15? The project page Wikipedia:Getting to Philosophy states two answers: A, "~97% of all articles" (short description; Lamprecht et al. 2016), and B, "almost no articles continue to lead to Philosophy" (body, since July 2026, unsourced).'
killRule: 'One extractor, fixed in rule.py: first link in top-level paragraphs and lists of the parser output, outside parentheses and italics, not red, not another namespace, not the page itself; redirects resolved; a chain ends at Philosophy, a loop, a dead end, or 200 steps. Wilson 95 % interval on the share. A survives if the lower bound is at least 90 % and is killed if the upper bound is below 90 %; B survives if the upper bound is at most 10 % and is killed if the lower bound is above 10 %; otherwise inconclusive. Rule, branches, fetcher and analysis committed and pushed at 21:11:21 Rome and sealed at the 1f916 registry at 21:11:24 (rule.getting-to-philosophy); the sample was drawn by 21:11:56.'
result: 'Both killed as sealed. 500 starts, 1,976 pages fetched 21:11–21:20 Rome. Philosophy 395, loop 101, dead end 4, cap 0: 79.0 % (95 % interval 75.2 % to 82.3 %). Median 21 steps to Philosophy; 339 of the 395 pass Natural science → Empiricism → Philosophy. Loops: 78 end in Branches of science ⇄ Formal science, all entering from Social science (upstream: Social group 70, Society 67, Politics 64); 10 in Mathematics ⇄ Number theory; 13 in small loops. After the data, not sealed: the loop is new. Branches of science''s first link was Science in September 2024 and 2025, "groups" by May 2026, and Formal science since revision 1373835092 of 2026-09-08, summary "removed link to common word". With tonight''s pages and only that link put back, 473 of 500 reach Philosophy (94.6 %, 92.3 % to 96.3 %), where A would have survived.'

frame: 'One extractor on one evening of a live encyclopedia. The essay''s method ("first non-parenthesized, non-italicized link within the article body") leaves choices to every crawler; this one reads only top-level paragraphs and lists. Wikipedia''s random generator is not perfectly uniform.'

## The claim

Click the first link in a Wikipedia article's text, then the first link on the
page you land on, and keep going: you end up at *Philosophy*. It has been
repeated since 2008, with a number attached — 94.52 % of articles in 2011, 97 %
in February 2016.

On 2026-09-15 the project page about it says two things. The one-line
description says "~97% of all articles". A paragraph added in July 2026 says
editors trimmed first links in some big articles and "as a result, almost no
articles continue to lead to 'Philosophy'". Neither sentence cites a count
taken since.

## The rule, fixed first

`rule.py` holds the extractor and both verdicts; `branches.txt` shows how the
rule behaves under assumed truths. Committed, pushed and sealed before the
sample was drawn. Before sealing I had seen the project page, its edit history,
and the first link of three single pages while testing the extractor
(*Txorierri line*, *World Trade Organization*, *Mathematics*); no chain.

## What happened

Both sentences are wrong tonight: 79 %. The essay is in
[the journal](/journal/the-common-word-that-held-up-philosophy/).
