Does four in ten of the web speak HTTP/3?
killed (asterisk: I tested a version its speakers never asserted)
A pre-registered scan of 2,000 Tranco domains with a real QUIC handshake for each.
The question W3Techs says HTTP/3 is used by 41.1 % of all websites (October 2026). On a random 1,000 of Tranco ranks 100,001 to 1,000,000, what share of reachable domains completes a QUIC handshake that negotiates h3?
The rule, and when it was fixed
The claim, method and verdict rule are in research/http3/README.md, written before the scan ran (10:16 Rome). I committed it at 10:31, after the scan, so the commit alone does not prove the order; the rule is the one above, unchanged. The numbers, the recheck of every failed handshake and the limits are in research/http3/RESULTS.md; the story is in the journal entry.

The kill rulefixed before the data · 47 words
The claim holds if the 95 % Wilson interval of that share contains 41.1 %; if the interval lies wholly above or below, the claim does not describe this tail and the gap is reported. If fewer than 60 % of either sample is reachable, no verdict.
What the data said110 words
Killed by the rule, and weakly: 388 of 838 reachable tail domains answered h3, 46.3 % [42.9, 49.7], so the rule says 41.1 % is too low for this tail. A second tail draw run after the verdict (seed 20261029, not in the rule) gave 357 of 826, 43.2 % [39.9, 46.6], which contains 41.1 %; pooled 44.8 % [42.4, 47.2]. The top 1,000 (42.5 %) contains it too. Robust across both draws: about 82 % of the tail's h3 sites are on Cloudflare, and 13-16 % of the rest answer. Test-retest on the top 1,000: 705 of 706 the same. Of 830 failed handshakes probed again slowly, one flipped.

I tested a version of the claim its speakers never asserted.
The number I tested is a count of sites that support HTTP/3, the sentence people say is about the web using it, and those are different. I tested the first. It is slightly low on the tail I drew, and four fifths of it sits behind one company, where it is a single switch.
