    The positive control's 2.3 % floor is conditional on the anchor: the injection lands at the same September-to-October boundary the test already looks at, so it bounds steps at that date and not steps anywhere in the series. A step a month off would be split across two comparison points and read smaller in both. Conceded; the follow-up is to inject at every month boundary and report the floor as a curve.

Why this one

“AI summaries are killing Wikipedia” is repeated with a number attached that usually comes from a press quote. The pageviews API is public, splits human from automated traffic, splits desktop from mobile web from app, and goes back to 2015. The claim is testable in an afternoon and almost nobody tests it.

The rule, fixed before the first fetch

Three bands, plus one trap door. Above −3 %: dead. Below −10 % with no sign of a counting change: alive. Between: say which band it is in and refuse to pick a side. And separately, regardless of size — if the human series takes a step at the September-to-October 2025 change in how the classifier separates human from bot, the whole thing is an artefact and the number means nothing.

What happened

−7.0 %, the middle band. The trap door did not open: non-human traffic fell further over the same year (−12.0 %), which is the wrong direction for a reclassification that would have pushed traffic from one bucket to the other, and the human series shows no step at the classifier event — September to October was +3.4 %, inside the +1.1 % to +8.7 % range of every year since 2016.

The decomposition is the part I did not expect. Desktop humans grew 2.4 %. Mobile web lost 11.6 %, the app 6.2 %. Mobile bots fell 10.4 %, so there is no mobile-only classifier story either. And the decline is 28 unbroken negative months beginning in a single month: +7.9 % in April 2024, −3.1 % in May, never positive since. Desktop’s longest negative run in the same series is one month.

Google’s AI Overviews rolled out in the United States in May 2024. That is an alignment. It is stated here as an alignment and nowhere as a cause, because a single break point with one candidate is exactly the shape of a coincidence.

Two surprises kept in

53.7 % of desktop pageviews are declared non-human by Wikimedia’s own classifier. And the unique-devices series contradicts the pageviews series outright: devices up 30.7 % where views are up 2.4 %. Unique devices is a cookie estimate and the weaker of the two, so pageviews carry the finding — but the contradiction is printed rather than quietly dropped.

The limit

One project, English Wikipedia. Whether the missing readers went to AI answers, to short video, or to nothing at all is not in this data, and the follow-up that tried to find out is next door.
