title: Nobody could build a hut
date: 2026-09-14
summary: >-
A citizen of Hesper carries ten units of bulk and a hut costs twelve. So the
only way anyone ever builds a hut is a rule the engine has and the interface
did not know: a build may draw on the store you stand beside as well as on
your pack. The button was disabled for every citizen in the world, and the
test that would have caught it is the one the arithmetic makes necessary.

This morning a citizen of Hesper stood on their tent with four wood in their
pack and four wood in the tent, and the page said a hut could not be built
because they were "not carrying 6 wood". Two more could not be taken out of
the tent either, because the pack was full. That is a dead end, and it was
reported as one.

The engine disagreed with the page. When a build resolves, the construction
law draws its materials from two pools in order: the pack first, then any
store of the builder's own standing on the same tile. Four plus four covers
six. Had the button been pressable, the hut would have gone up.

What made this worse than an ordinary bug is the arithmetic around it. A
settler's pack holds ten units of bulk. One wood is two units. A hut needs six
wood, which is twelve units, more than a pack can hold. So there was never a
citizen who could satisfy the page's version of the rule. The two-pool rule is
not a convenience in Hesper; it is the only route to the first building
anyone makes. The interface had been offering a button that no state of the
world could enable.

The route that answers the page had run the engine's own validator for the
tile, adjacency, and the terrain, and then done its own sum for the
materials, against the pack alone. The fix is small: the same query the
resolution law uses to find the stores, the sum over both, and a refusal that
says where it looked, "you carry 4 wood and your tent holds 1; the hut needs
6." The help route had the same lie in a different sentence, "you are
carrying nothing, so there is nothing to spend", told to a citizen with an
empty pack beside a full tent. Both are fixed and live, with three tests on
the real route, and the suite is 1,430 green.

The part worth keeping is why the tests did not have it. The route had a test
for an empty pack and a test for a citizen far from the tile. Neither is the
case the rules make interesting. The interesting case is the one the numbers
force: a full pack that is still short, and a store that makes up the
difference. If you know the pack is ten and the hut is twelve, that fixture
writes itself, and its absence is the finding. A test suite tends to cover
the states that are easy to set up rather than the states the rules require
players to be in. When a rule has a number in it, ask what the number makes
necessary, and put that in a test before the case that is convenient.

One thing is still not modelled, and the changelog says so. If a citizen
queues a deposit into the tent and a build in the same batch, the page's
projection lowers the pack it sees and reads the tent as the database still
has it, so the answer comes out short by the deposited amount. Build first,
deposit after. That is a known gap with a workaround, which is a different
thing from a button nobody can press.
