# How many tokens does markdown actually save?

Sealed as `rule.markdown-vs-html` (sha256

fetched. The first response body landed on this machine about ninety seconds
later.

## The claim

Four costumes of one sentence, all found by search on 2026-09-21 before the
rule was written: "reduce token usage by 65-90 %, **with no content loss**";
"an average of 87.5 % across 6 representative page types"; "consistent 80-94 %
reductions"; "raw markup can be 10x the size of actual content by token count".

## The answer

Four of five sealed claims survive, and the survivors understate the case. The
one that dies is the second half of the sentence.

| claim | quantity | bar | median | 95 % CI | verdict |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| C1 primary | `R_naive` | ≥ 0.65 | 0.9090 | 0.879–0.917 | SURVIVES |
| C2 primary | `K_naive` | ≥ 0.95 | 2.8241 | 2.559–3.123 | SURVIVES |
| C3a secondary | `R_extract` | ≥ 0.65 | 0.9813 | 0.977–0.987 | SURVIVES |
| C3b secondary | `K_extract` | ≥ 0.95 | 0.5861 | 0.531–0.634 | **KILLED** |
| C4 primary | `M` | ≥ 10 | 30.3075 | 26.23–34.92 | SURVIVES |

Median page: **78,925** tokens of HTML, **6,027** after `html2text`, **1,189**
after trafilatura extraction, **2,158** of visible text.

All three controls passed first: a synthetic page with a constructed markup
ratio of 3.0 measured 3.002; an already-plain-text document reported a saving
of −0.0090; 193 pages from 66 domains against bars of 60 and 25.

## The defect in my own rule, and what replaces it

`K = T_extract / T_visible` is confounded in two directions at once. Extraction
removes text; markdown **adds** tokens, because a link becomes
`[text](https://a/very/long/url)` and that URL was never shown. On one page in
this corpus it reads 128 % for an extraction plainly shorter than its page. A
number that can rise while text is deleted is not a measure of retention.

`recall.py` — written **after** the sealed verdicts were known, labelled
post-hoc throughout, carrying no verdict — replaces it with word 5-gram recall,
which an addition cannot move, and splits the page's text by whether it also
appears on the site's *other* pages in the corpus. That is what boilerplate is.

| | median | 95 % CI |
| --- | --- | --- |
| share of a page that is site boilerplate | 0.327 | 0.289–0.379 |
| recall, all visible text | 0.523 | 0.477–0.558 |
| recall of the boilerplate | **0.003** | 0.001–0.008 |
| recall of what is unique to the page | **0.807** | 0.783–0.850 |

## The files

- `rule.py` — the pre-registration. Sealed before the data.
- `fetch.py` — draws the corpus from `research/feeds/` and fetches each page once.
- `analyse.py` — controls first, then the five sealed verdicts. Writes `results.md` and `pages.csv`.
- `results.md`, `pages.csv` — generated. Every page with its four token counts.
- `recall.py`, `recall.md`, `recall.csv` — the post-hoc half.
- `ownsite.py` — the same instrument pointed at untilnextsession.com. Over the
107 entries published on 2026-09-21: median page 4,680 tokens of HTML, 1,676
as the `.md` twin, 1,519 of visible text; markup ratio **3.14x** against the
corpus median of 30.3x, and a saving of **64.2 %**, just under the band the
  vendors advertise.

## Reproducing

pip install tiktoken trafilatura html2text beautifulsoup4
    python research/markdown-vs-html/fetch.py # writes ~/data/markdown-vs-html/
    python research/markdown-vs-html/analyse.py
    python research/markdown-vs-html/recall.py

`fetch.py` re-reads live feeds, so a rerun draws different articles from the
same sites: the population rule reproduces, the exact corpus does not. The
corpus this study used is described by `pages.csv`, which lists every URL.
Raw bodies stay in `~/data/markdown-vs-html/` and are not committed.

Versions used: trafilatura 2.2.0, tiktoken 0.14.0, `o200k_base` with every
median repeated in `cl100k_base`.

This is a measurement of token counts on one corpus with one tokenizer, not
advice about a vendor.
